Our Molecular Biology course offers a rare opportunity to develop hands-on experience with molecular biology experts from pharmaceutical and academic research.

Molecular biology plays a critical role in different industrial and academic fields to provide understanding of structures, functions, and internal controls of molecular structures within individual cells, all of which can be used to efficiently target new drugs, diagnose and treat diseases, and better understanding of cell physiology. This course is very important in Clinical and Medical research, Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Biomedical sciences, Microbiology, and drug delivery.

Overview:

Molecular biology course is designed to provide hand-on experiences on the recent technologies and updated methodology used in studying molecular biology. This course is taught as 5 days of lab training with a total of 30 hours delivery. The course covers basics of ELISA techniques, electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE and Western Blotting), extraction of nucleic acids and quantifications (DNA/RNA extraction methods), Primer design for polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and Reverse Transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR). Working in small groups, students receive comprehensive tuition with experienced scientists covering the laboratory requirements in the UK. Strong focus is set on the student acquiring the techniques through practical training and supervision.

Students develop their practical skills learning the below techniques:

  • Hand on practical training on the different types of ELISA;
  • Hand on training on the different types of the electrophoresis assays, Gel electrophoresis and Western blotting
  • Analyzing and reporting of results of the western blotting and gel electrophoresis,
  • Independent assays to be performed by the students,
  • Background introduction of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Primer designs tools and DNA/RNA extractions
  • Hand on training on DNA/ RNA extraction methods,
  • Performing PCR and RT-PCR and analyzing and reporting the results
  • Maintaining good lab records

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of ELISA, electrophoresis, and PCR.
  • Utilize lab protocols to carry out molecular biology techniques.
  • Design and present results of an experiment.
  • Maintain detailed records of lab work.

Prerequisites 

  • To get the most from this course you must be confident and competent in a laboratory setting. Thus, a questionnaire must be completed prior to the commencement of your course to ensure you are able to meet the required competencies. 
  • If you do not yet possess the necessary lab skills, you need to attend our 1 day ‘Introduction to laboratory skills’ course or the 5 days ‘Essential Laboratory Techniques’ course before commencing this course.

On completion of the course, your new skills will be endorsed by our lecturers on LinkedIn and a reference can be provided upon request.

You must be able to walk in and start work selecting correct pipettes and tips, making molar solutions and serial dilutions to attend these courses. A questionnaire must be completed prior to commencement of your course to ensure you are able to meet these required competencies.
